Why OT?

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupations are the everyday things we do that occupy our days. The things we want, need or are expected to do as an individual, part of a family group and/or as part of the community. Children have many occupations that vary according to their age and stage of development, the context of their family and their community. Sometimes children experience difficulties with some or many of the skills these roles require. That is where an occupational therapist can help! We work with you to figure out what a child needs/wants/is expected to do, what specific aspects they are finding difficult, why these areas are presenting a challenge and most importantly strategies to overcome these challenges.

How can an occupational therapist help?

occupational therapists assess a child’s strengths and difficulties and help children and families understand how these strengths and difficulties enable and/or prevent them from doing the things they want or need to do. We then make a plan together of how we can support greater participation.

What makes our service different?

At Kids&Community we have a team of experienced therapists and therapy assistants who have solely practiced in paediatrics and have well developed skills across a range of special interest areas. We are able to offer a wide range of flexible service options that allow us to truly tailor a program to your child and family’s specific and unique needs.

What can you expect?

We will work with you to identify goals and priorities and formulate a service response to address your concerns and your child’s needs. This may include clinic based sessions, sessions at home, in early education settings or schools or other community based activities. You can expect clearly identified goals developed after identification of your child’s strengths and difficulties. These goals will be monitored and reviewed at set timeframes. You can expect evidence based intervention that is tailored to meet your children and family’s unique needs.

What are the foundations of our service?

Everything we do is firmly grounded by our core values of connections, play, independence and participation. In every aspect of the service we aim to strengthen connections and relationships, be playful and create opportunities and spaces for play, enable independence and support and facilitate participation.
